Um das Gleichgewicht im Hause Scheel hat sich eine Abordnung bundesdeutscher Zimmermänner verdient gemacht. Ihr Bundesvorsitzender, Donat Müller, überreichte dem Staatsoberhaupt einen zünftigen, schwarzen Zimmermannshut, weil Walter Scheel beim Besuch der Handwerksmesse in München im vergangenen Frühjahr mit dieser schmucken Kopfbedeckung geliebäugelt hatte. In einem Richtspruch hatten sie dazu gedichtet:

"Wenn nur der Gattin Doktorhut den Haken ziert, das Gleichgewicht im Hause wär gestört...". Für die Herstellung des "richtigen Verhältnisses" dankte der Bundespräsident seinen Gästen mit einem kalten Klaren anstelle des sonst üblichen Sekts.
