Deutsch: Deutscher Fotograf, gründete 1928 Atelier und Postkartenverlag in Wernigerode. 1934 zog Baur nach Potsdam, wo er bis 1953, unterbrochen durch den Krieg, lebte. Ab 1954 tätig in Aschau im Chiemgau. Schwerpunkte von Baurs Werk sind Landschafts-, Architektur- und Industriefotografie.

1753 bis 1755 ließ König Friedrich II. von Preußen nach einem Entwurf von Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff einen Obelisken aus rotem, schlesischem und weißem, italienischem Marmor auf dem Alten Markt in Potsdam errichten. Die beabsichtigte Wirkung einer römischen Platzanlage war unübersehbar. Mit dem Obelisken wurde natürlich auch auf das alte Ägypten verwiesen. Dort stehen bzw. standen diese Stelen als steingewordenen Strahlen des Sonnengottes Re meist paarweise vor Tempeln. Sie verkörperten die göttliche Weltordnung, was letztlich auch in Potsdam mit dem gewählten Aufstellungsort des Obelisken auf der Platzmitte, etwa dem Schnittpunkt von Schloss, Rathaus und Kirche, beabsichtigt war.

Auch der skulpturale Schmuck aus Sphingen von Johann Peter Benkert, römischen Senatorenfiguren von Gottlieb Heymüller und den vier Porträts der Hohenzollernfürsten Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm, König Friedrich I., Friedrich Wilhelm I. und Friedrich II. dienten der Symbolik als Herrschermonument und architektonischer Verweis auf Rom. Die vier Bildnisse aus weißem Marmor, von denen nur noch das Profilrelief des Großen Kurfürsten erhalten ist, schuf Benjamin Giese (1705-1755). Beim Bombenangriff im April 1945 schwer beschädigt wurde der Obelisk 1969 bis auf den Sockel abgebaut.
