For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.
Erfurt, Dom, Apostel-Portal ADN-ZB Beil 28.7.84-B- 3-teilige Serie Erfurt im Detail (1984-0728-6-8n) Erfurt: Apostel-Portal. Die thüringische Bezirkshauptstadt Erfurt ist reich an architektonischen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Zu den berühmtesten Bauten gehört zweifelsohne der katholische Dom. In seiner jetzigen Form ist er ein vorwiegend hoch- und spätgotischer Bau aus dem 14. und 15. Jahrhundert, wenngleich sich auch Reste einer spätromanischen Basilika erhalten haben. Diese schön gearbeiteten Apostelfiguren schmücken eines der Portale der Vorhalle am nördlichen Querschiff, die dem Besucher als Erstes auffällt, wenn er die breite Freitreppe, die vom Domplatz nach oben führt, erklommen hat.
