Der Vorsitzende des außenpolitischen Ausschusses der Volkskammer der DDR, Hermann Axen (2.v.r.), Mitglied des Politbüros des ZK der SED, traf am 1.5. auf dem Washingtoner Regierungsflughafen Andrews Air Force Base zu einem Besuch in den Vereinigten Staaten ein. Er wurde vom stellvertretenden Unterstaatssekretär im USA-Außenministerium William Bodde (2.v.l.) begrüßt. An dem Gespräch nach der Ankunft nahmen der Botschafter der DDR in den USA, Dr. Gerhard Herder (r.), und der Botschafter der USA in der DDR, Francis J. Meehan (l.), teil.
