For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme. Zentralbild Hanke 28.11.62 "Völkerfreundschaft" trotzte USA-Piraten. Während die Republik Kuba unter der verschärften See-Blockade der USA und den ständigen Provokationen der amerikanischen Söldner zu leiden hatte, lief am 27. Oktober 1962 das größte Urlauberschiff der DDR, die "Völkerfreundschaft" in der kubanischen Hauptstadt ein. Die Mannschaft und die 550 Passsagiere wurden von der Bevölkerung Havannas mit großem Jubel empfangen. Für sie stellte der Besuch einen Ausdruck der internationalen Solidarität dar. Die "Völkerfreundschaft" wurde bei ihrer Fahrt nach Kuba von einem Marineflugzeug der USA-Luftstreitkräfte und von einem USA-Torbedoboot-Zerstörer bedroht. |
