Im Lager Gronenfelde bei Frankfurt/Oder
wurde am 19. Mai 1948 der 500.000. deutsche Kriegsgefangene aus der Sowjetunion entlassen. Die Berliner Presse sowie Vertreter der Zentralverwaltung für Umsiedler, des FDB und der Volkssolidarität waren anwesend und hatten Gelegenheit, das deutsche Entlassungslager und die sowjetische Entlassungsstelle in der Hornkaserne zu besichtigen.

Auf diesem gepflegten neuangelegten Friedhofsgelände sind 3.700 ehemalige deutsche Kriegsgefangene beerdigt. Sie starben in der Zeit vom 23.9.1945 bis 6.9.1946. Alle später Verstorbenen sind auf den städtischen Friedhof in Frankfurt/Oder beerdigt. Die Sterbeziffer hat in den letzten Jahren sehr stark nachgelassen. Im Januar 48 verstarben 6 ehemalige Kriegsgefangene, im Februar 8, im März 7 und im April 13.
