Nederlands: Dit zogenoemde Sowei-masker geeft een ideaalbeeld van vrouwelijke schoonheid weer. Uiterlijke schoonheid geldt daarbij als een verwijzing naar innerlijke schoonheid of goedheid. De voorstellingen verbeelden dus ook de ideale vrouw naar karakter en gedrag.
Het streven naar vrouwelijke perfectie staat centraal in het Sande-genootschap van de Mende en hun buurvolken in Sierra Leone en Liberia. Dit eeuwenoude vrouwengenootschap bereidt jonge, huwbare meisjes tijdens een initiatieperiode voor op een bestaan als volwassen vrouw, echtgenote en moeder. Het Sande-genootschap is nog steeds actief. Dit helmmasker stelt de Sande-geest voor. Zij wordt ten tonele gevoerd door een danser met een helmmasker. De in zwarte raffia gehulde danser is zelf een vrouw, hetgeen zeer uitzonderlijk is voor Afrika. Wanneer zij statig door het dorp schrijdt, houdt het Sande-personage de meisjes en omstanders een spiegel van de ideale vrouw voor: waardig, verstandig, goed verzorgd, mooi, welvarend en gezond. Het grote en hoge voorhoofd van het masker duidt op wijsheid en een sterke persoonlijkheid. De kalmte en rust die een wijze vrouw tentoonspreidt, komen tot uitdrukking in de geloken ogen. De kleine mond met enigszins samengeperste lippen geeft aan dat zwijgen vaak verstandiger is dan spreken. De gladde glanzende huis en de vetrolletjes in de hals benadrukken dat de ideale vrouw ook gezond en welvarend is. De halsplooien, die men als schoonheidstekens beschouwt, hebben voor ingewijden nog andere betekenissen. Zo verwijzen zij naar de geribbelde rupsen waaruit vlinders ontspruiten- een zinspeling op de meisjes die tijdens de initiatieperiode tot mooie jonge vrouwen ontpoppen. De plooien in de hals refereren ook aan de golfjes die ontstaan wanneer de Sande-geest vanuit het water de wereld van de mensen betreedt. Het maskerwezen treedt vier a vijf keer per jaar op en blijft de rest van de tijd uit het zicht Beschrijving Zwart antropomorf masker, met ingetogen gelaat. Inkervingen in de nek en hals. Voorzien van een hoofdtooi. Aan de onderzijde van het masker bevinden zich een aantal gaatjes waaraan een kraag van raffia kan worden vastgemaakt. |
