This photo was taken on March 17th, 1928 during the historic 3422 mile Coast-to-Coast run across America (Los Angeles to New York City, fondly known as the Bunion Derby. This was segment from Williams to Flagstaff. Pictured on left, Andy Payne (43) and on right John Cronick (188). Payne would eventually win the race and its $25,000 prize. The race was sponsored by the Cheek Neal Coffee Company and If you look closely between the two runners, you can see the open door into the world’s largest coffeepot at 11 ft. high that was bolted to the chassis of a truck. It served 90 gallons of Maxwell House coffee a day to the runners. While the photographer was unknown, the location was Cameron and Longfellow's Service Station, later replaced by the current Parks Store.
