Die Anfänge der Burg gehen auf das Jahr 1150 zurück. Damals wurde eine Vorgängeranlage, möglicherweise ein einfaches Wehrhaus mit Palisadenzaun und hölzernen Turm, als Landeshuata (Landeshüter, Landesschutz) urkundlich erwähnt. Das war noch vor der Gründung der Stadt Landshut. Die Anlage war auch der Namensgeber der Stadt. Die ältesten Teile der heutigen Anlage stammen aus der Zeit um 1200, die Zeit, in der Herzog Ludwig der Kehlheimer die Stadt Landshut gründete. Fertiggestellt war die Burg um das Jahr 1235. Damals besuchte auch Kaiser Friedrich II die Stadt und die Burg. Die Herzöge von Bayern-Landshut erweiterten die Burg im 15. Jhd und nannten die Anlage in Trausnitz, was soviel heißt wie "Trau dich nicht", im 16. Jhd um. 1634, im Dreißigjährigen Krieg, wurde die Burg von den Schweden eingenommen und teilweise zerstört. Ab dem 18. Jhd diente die Anlage unter anderem als Kaserne, als Gefängnis, als kurfürstliche Rentamtsregister, Lazarett und Cholerahospital. König Ludwig II ließ die ab 1869 im Obergeschoss des Fürstenhauses prächtige und herrschaftliche Räume einrichten. Im Oktober 1961 brach im Fürstenhaus ein Feuer aus. Die Schäden waren verheerend: Alle Wandmalereien wurden zerstört. Ebenso die herrschaftlichen Räume von König Ludwig II. Erst 2011 wurde einer Räume wiederhergestellt und mit originalen Möbeln aus Herrenchiemsee ausgestattet. Die Burg gehört heute zu Bayrischen Schlösserverwaltung und kann besichtigt werden.
