editDescriptionBurn scars in Okavango Delta (MODIS 2018-06-20).jpg |
English: Fires swept across the Okavango River Delta in May and June, 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra satellite acquired a false-color image of the scene on June 17. The false-color image was composed from a combination of visible and shortwave infrared light (MODIS bands 7-2-1). The burn scar appears dark brown; vegetation is bright green; bare ground is light brown; and water is dark blue.
The Okavango Delta in northern Botswana is one of the world’s largest inland deltas. It is known for its annual flooding, which happens between February and May as a wave of water from seasonal rainfall traverses about 20,000 square kilometers of wetlands. But just as water makes a regular appearance in this part of the Kalahari Desert, so too does fire. Floodwaters help generate the thick fuel that fosters wildfires. However, the fires are primarily set by humans – particularly by those wanting to clear land to use for crops and/or pasture. When such fires grow out of control, they can consume large areas and leave the ground heavily scarred from charred vegetation. |
