Description
English: Bury Street The Caleb Lovejoy Almshouses, terraced stone cottages on the west bank of the Wey by Guildford's St Nicholas Church. These almshouses date from 1839 and were paid for with money left by Caleb Lovejoy, who had founded an almshouse charity in the 17th century. Born in Guildford, he was a wealthy merchant, his money having been partly funded by the supply of wagons to Oliver Cromwell’s army during the civil war. His intention was to provide 'accommodation for four poor persons of good character'. The charity still exists, administered by St Nicholas Church, and provides accommodation for four single women.
