editDescriptionBuzzer - geograph.org.uk - 563823.jpg |
English: Buzzer Loch Leven Castle is plagued by various insects at different times of the year. In June the Buzzers have the opportunity to make best of their short lives. This is a closeup of the bigger Chironomid non-biting fly or midge which, along with millions of others, form vast swarms which make eating a picnic quite difficult.
The insects usually swarm on the windward side of the island and you can see the pupae husks which have been discarded as they emerged from the water. A very dangerous time for these newly fledged buzzers as they struggle to break free from their suits https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/563872 and get through the surface tension of the top film of water.
