Summary edit
DescriptionByzantine Church in Philadelphia.jpg |
English: At the time time this church was built in the 6th century AD on the cite of many previous ancient buildings, Amman was still called Philadelphia. The church follows a typical basilical plan consisting of a central nave and two side isles, along with the "chancel screen" separating the the eastern end of the building from the rest. Most likely, some of the side rooms were added by the Umayyads, who (like the Byzantines and other before them) recycled buildings for their own uses. The floor shows fragments of Byzantine mosaics with a Greek inscription reading that the church "was paved with mosaics by the zeal and labor" of who? Unfortunately, the name is lost.
