Description
English: Built in 1930, this Mediterranean Revival and Art Deco-style building was designed by Hardie Phillip and Bertram Goodhue for the C. Brewer Company, the smallest of the “Big Five” companies that controlled vast sectors of Hawaii’s land and economy during the Territorial period. The building features a stucco exterior with a hipped tile roof, broad overhanging eaves, steel casement and double-hung windows, concrete and metal railings at the building’s multiple balconies, geometric screens, a recessed front entrance with stair-stepping walls on either side, and a two-story art deco lobby inside. The building housed the C. Brewer Company until the diversification of the company’s businesses and a subsequent move to Hilo in 1998, after which it became home to the Honolulu branch of the University of Phoenix, which restored the building under the direction of architect Janine Clifford in 1999. Since 2010, the building has been home to the headquarters of the Hawaii Community Foundation. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
