Nederlands: Negatief. De eerste Europeanen die in de Indische Archipel arriveerden, waren onder de indruk van het feit dat veel inheemse volkeren zich iedere dag ten minste een maal en soms vaker wasten in de rivier. Daarnaast kwamen ze, meestal pas in de 19e eeuw, ook met groepen in contact die zich juist nauwelijks wasten. Voor de Europeanen gold precies het tegenovergestelde: in de 17e eeuw was dagelijks wassen ongebruikelijk, terwijl het in de 19e eeuw normaler was geworden. Overigens had al rond 1600 een Europeaan, die de stad Bantam bezocht, opgemerkt dat dat wassen in de rivier zo zijn schaduwzijde had gezien het (toen al) zeer smerige water. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
