Description |
English: Bronze statue of a chained slave. Although slaves or prisoners of war have often been depicted in metal figures, among others by the Dogon in Mali, no similar object is known to have been documented.
Slavery existed in Africa long before the Europeans came. Neighboring peoples were taken prisoner of war and trafficked or put to work. The statue's facial characteristics is typical of the style of Cameroon: bulging eyes, large teeth and a strong nose. |
