English: Toba-Batak sacrificial ceremony with three sacrificial poles, Sumatra
Nederlands: Negatief. Naast huizen voor families en voor de doden kenden veel Sumatraanse dorpen ook nog andere huisachtige gebouwtjes. Zo was er vaak een dorpshuis (bale of balai) waar vergaderingen gehouden werden en waar de jonge mannen en reizigers sliepen. Daarnaast trof men in veel dorpen aparte rijstschuren (sopo) aan. Bij de Toba-Bataks bevond zich daarin een ruimte die gebruikt werd als slaapplaats en vergaderruimte voor mannen (foto). Op de foto ook drie toverstaven (tunggal panaluan) die gebruikt werden door een datu/guru. De staf had gewoonlijk een uitsparing waarin pupuk, een magische substantie gebrouwen van lichaamsdelen van een menselijk slachtoffer, gestopt kon worden. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
