Description |
Nederlands: De man is een 'bogin', een soort medicijnman. Hij staat in contact met de geesten van overledenen via zogenaamde djinns (arabisch voor onzichtbare wezens). Deze djinns brengen de berichten uit het dodenrijk over aan de bogin en fungeren als bemiddelaars. Door met een kalebas op de grond te kloppen roept de bogin de djinns op, vervolgens draait hij de kalebas rond en beklopt hij deze. Het geluid dat zo wordt geproduceerd bevat de stemmen van de djinns, deze vertaalt de bogin in woorden die hij vervolgens weer vertaalt voor zijn 'patiënten'. De bogin kijkt hier via een kommetje met een vloeistof in de toekomst van zijn cliënte. Zie voor een nagenoeg gelijke zwartwit opname van deze behandelsessie inventarisnummers 20010344 en 20010345.
Deze opname is gemaakt tijdens één van de twee verzamelexpedities die het Tropenmuseum in 1970-1971 ondernam ter voorbereiding op de grote tentoonstelling in 1971-1972, getiteld 'Samo. Een Afrikaans Savannevolk in ontwikkeling'. De expedities duurden elk drie maanden en werden uitgevoerd door de heren J.T. Broekhuijse en F.M. Cowan. In een brief die de heer Cowan op 7 juni 1970 vanuit Toma schreef aan de directeur van het museum beschrijft hij het verloop van de reis naar Burkina Faso van hem en de heer Broekhuijse. Hieruit blijkt dat ze op 24 mei arriveerden op het landbouwcentrum van de Stichting Nederlandse Vrijwilligers nabij Toma. Ze kozen een drietal dorpen in de omgeving als werkterrein en concentreerden zich direct op het filmen en fotograferen. Als één van de eerste onderwerpen werd 'in het kader van het ritueel ... een vorm van waarzeggerij... verfilmd'. In 1969 werd al contact gelegd met deze man, zie daarvoor inventarisnummers 20010086 en 20010362. |
