Nederlands: Negatief. Thee kwam evenmin als koffie, tabak, kina en cacao oorspronkelijk voor in de Indische Archipel. De VOC haalde grote hoeveelheden thee uit China, maar deed geen moeite het op Java aan te planten. Dat zou pas aan het begin van de 19e eeuw onder het Nederlands-Indisch gouvernement geprobeerd worden. De thee bleek vooral goed aan te slaan in de geaccidenteerde gebieden van de Preanger. Het kwam grotendeels in handen van particuliere Europese ondernemers. In de 20e eeuw werd het ook een bevolkingsgewas. Net als koffie werd het vaak onder schaduwbomen geteeld. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
