English: Governor-General B.C. de Jonge and his staff watching forced labourers near Gitgit who are constructing a new road through Bali
Nederlands: Foto. Bali was al lange tijd een dichtbevolkt eiland geweest. Het bestond uit een aantal staatjes geregeerd door eigen vorsten toen het koloniaal bestuur na 1900 het gebied verder onder controle bracht. Er was een netwerk van wegen geschikt voor transport te voet, per rijdier of per kar. De komst van de auto zorgde ervoor dat het transport voortaan sneller verliep, maar zonder aanpassingen aan het wegdek ging dat niet. Op de foto zijn dwangarbeiders bezig met het verbeteren van een weg dwars door Bali te Gitgit. Ze worden gadegeslagen door GG de Jonge en zijn entourage, op reis (uiteraard in auto's) over Java en Bali. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
