Nederlands: Negatief. De vorsten van Soemba waren er beter dan die van Timor in geslaagd om de VOC buiten de deur te houden, onder meer door te beweren dat het kappen van sandelhout (Soemba werd ook Sandelhouteiland genoemd) op religieuze bezwaren stuitte. In de 20e eeuw werd het echter lastiger om de koloniale staat te weren. De foto laat zien hoe 'de staat' goede sier maakte met 'de moderne technologie'. De afbeelding illustreert ook mooi de verschillen in 'modernisering' binnen de Archipel: terwijl de Soembanezen gefascineerd rond de platenspeler dromden, hadden de Javaanse arbeiders die in vaste dienst waren van een suikerfabriek zo'n ding al in huis.
