Nederlands: foto. Was Deli de kern van het zogeheten Cultuurgebied, het iets noordelijker gelegen sultanaat Langkat maakte daar al snel ook deel van uit. De onderneming Batang Serangan werd in 1888 door de Deli Maatschappij opgericht. In 1901 was men hier begonnen met de aanplant van de rubber producerende ficus, maar al in 1907 stapte men over op hevearubber, oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Brazilië. Rubber was in feite het tweede succesverhaal uit deze streek, na dat van de tabak. Aanvankelijk paste men tamelijk drastische tapsystemen toe, zoals de zogeheten hele visgraat, ter weerszijden van een verticale tapgoot. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
