Nederlands: Vroeger werd aangenomen dat dit type masker in het algemeen wordt gebruikt voor ceremoniële dansen die in verband staan met de vooroudercultus.
Het masker heeft echter deel uitgemaakt van een dorpsmaskerade waarin gewoonlijk drie karakters in optreden. De eerste is een mooie jonge vrouw (Gu), haar haren opgemaakt in enkele vlechten die tesamen soms een centrale kam (soort 'kroon') vormen. Vermoedelijk onderhavig masker. De tweede is Zaouli, een oudere man met baard. Het derde karakter is Zamble, een antilope, soms de bosbok (Tragelaphus scriptus) voorstellend die veel in de regio voorkomt (Phillips 1995: 455). Af en toe worden er danscompetities gehouden tussen buurdorpen waarin deze maskers optreden. Soms treed Zamble op met Zaouli, in dit geval wordt de antilope dan beschouwd als de zus of vrouw van de oude man. Wanneer Zamble met Gu danst is de antilope de man en de mooi jonge vrouw zijn echtgenote. Aan het eind van de danscompetitie verschijnt het Gu-masker die de vrouw van de zegevierende Zamble en danst samen met hem het hele dorp rond. Zulke maskerades zijn in diverse vormen een populair vermaak in Centraal-Ivoorkust. Het masker treedt dus publiekelijk op, maar is wel eigendom van een familie en wordt van generatie op generatie doorgegeven. |
