Nederlands: Figuratieve beelden uit Zuid-Benin staan bekend als bocio. De term bocio is een samenstelling van 'bo', amulet, en 'cio' lijk. Een bocio verbindt het zichtbare met het onzichtbare. Het uiteinde wordt in de grond gestoken. Het beeld komt dan uit de grond op aarde, de mensenwereld. Het doel van een bocio is om de essentie van datgene dat hij symboliseert te vangen. Het is geen portret van iets of iemand, maar moet het kwaad vastzetten of verlammen (Grootaers, 2002:265).
De bocio is alomtegenwoordig in de Fon cultuur. Ze bevinden zich voor of achter huizen, bij schrijnen, in het midden van pleinen en elders waar mensen zijn. Ze staan ook midden in de bossen, gekleed in lompen, of juist in nieuwe kleding, afhankelijk van wie geïmiteerd wordt. De primaire functie van een bocio is het vangen van kwaad, die het beeld voor een echt mens aanziet. De richting waar het beeld in kijkt, is waar het kwaad vandaan kan komen. De bocio vormt de grens tussen de getemde krachten van de menselijke beschaving en de wilde krachten daar vlak buiten (Picton in Phillips, 1996:429; ). Bocio kunnen een duidelijke antropomorfe vorm hebben, maar kunnen ook bestaan uit een simpele bewerking van een boomstam. De esthetiek van de bocio die bestemd zijn voor koninklijke doeleinden is dermate anders dan die voor gewone burgers. Laatstgenoemde zijn meer ruw gesneden, vaak onvolledig, en niet decoratief. Magische materialen die bij koninklijke bocio vaak in het beeld worden verwerkt, zitten bij deze beelden aan de buitenkant, duidelijk zichtbaar. Deze materialen, zoals metaal, kralen, botten, bont en bloed worden gebruikt vanwege hnu fysieke en symbolische kracht. Ook gebruikte technieken zoals knopen en vastbinden hebben deze krachten. Beide worden duidelijk zichtbaar tentoongesteld om het object visueel choquerend, krachtig en verbazingwekkend te maken. De groteskheid en lelijkheid van deze bocio vormen onderdeel van hun kracht (Visona et. al. 2000:261-265). |
