English: Woodcarvers
Nederlands: Negatief. Houtsnijwerk van Bali is nu onderdeel van het rijtje tempels, dansen en stranden waarmee het eiland zich kwalificeert als toeristische attractie. Nu zijn toeristische attracties dat doorgaans niet voor niets en het houtsnijwerk op de foto laat slechts één aspect zien van de sterke picturale traditie van Bali. Naast afbeeldingen in hout zijn er natuurlijk ook de uitbundig versierde tempels en de schilderingen op verschillende materialen waarin de kunst religieuze voorstellingen, mensen (wat van de islam niet zou mogen) en de natuur bij elkaar bracht en brengt. Bali werd zo een 'aards paradijs' dat Europese schilders verlokte om daar te komen wonen en werken. Daardoor werd de kunst van Bali weer beïnvloed. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Houtsnijders aan het werk |
