Nederlands: De slavenarmband diende als herkenningsteken, niet als sieraad. Deze armbanden worden niet meer gedragen (in 1970 ook al niet meer). Er zijn nog wel mensen die in een afhankelijke positie t.o.v. anderen leven. Dit lijkt op slavernij, en wordt vaak ook nog zo genoemd, maar de verhouding 'baas' - 'ondergeschikte' is veel reëler. Meestal is er sprake van een volledige opname in de familie, met alles wat daarbij hoort: voeding, onderdak, sociale verzorging, bescherming etc. De kinderen van deze mensen zijn geen slaaf meer en worden geheel in de gemeenschap geïntegreerd. Zo trof de heer Broekhuyse een groep Peul in een bepaald dorp van de Samo die volgens hem nu geheel in de samenleving waren opgenomen. In hoeverre deze opname op alle terreinen is gebeurd, is onduidelijk. Vaak lijkt het voor de buitenstaander een integratie, complete acceptatie terwijl er in de gemeenschap zelf nog wel degelijk tegenstellingen zijn.
De inheemse naam Bèrè Zan is samengesteld uit de woorden 'Bèrè', dat 'slaaf' betekent en 'Zan', dat 'armband' betekent. |
