Nederlands: Het maskertje wordt als hanger gedragen aan een koord om de hals.
Omtrent de functie bestaan er in de literatuur diverse interpretaties. De ene benadrukt vooral de beschermende en helende invloed van de hanger op de drager. De andere stelt dat de hangers voornamelijk als sieraad werden gedragen om de schoonheid en de stijl van de drager te verhogen. Het een hoeft echter het ander niet uit te sluiten. De hanger wordt ook wel in hout uitgevoerd. Deze hangers worden echter gesneden door familieleden en genezers naar voorbeeld van maskers gebruikt tijdens een genezingsritueel voor de latere drager. Uit veldonderzoek is gebleken dat ervaren snijders de meerderheid van de ivoren en benen hangers maken om als sieraad te dienen en het gevoel van schoonheid en stijl van hun cliënten te verhogen (Phillips 1995: 262). De inheemse naam 'Gikhokho' betekent letterlijk 'gesneden of geslepen dingen'. De kenmerkende driepuntige haartooi heet 'Mukote'. |
