Nederlands: Foto. Aan het einde van de 17e eeuw werd het duidelijk dat de Nederlanders op Java zouden blijven. Langzaam maar zeker ontwikkelden zich nu ceremoniële omgangsvormen tussen Europeanen en Javanen die enerzijds bedoeld waren om verdere conflicten zo veel mogelijk te vermijden terwijl men anderzijds probeerde om verschillen in machtsverhoudingen zo subtiel mogelijk tot uitdrukking te brengen, daarbij iedereen in zijn waarde latend. Zo sprak de vorst van Mataram van 'mijn vader' of 'mijn grootvader' als hij het over de Gouverneur-Generaal had en werd te Batavia eer bewezen aan brieven van deze vorst alsof het hem zelf betrof. Als na 1830 de vorsten van Midden-Java niet zo veel meer te vertellen hebben, worden de omgangsvormen zo mogelijk nog ingewikkelder. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
