Nederlands: Negatief. De Indische Archipel is vaak de Gordel van Smaragd genoemd, maar het is in elk geval ook een gordel van vulkanen. In het noorden van Sumatra begint een keten van vulkanen die zich voortzet op Java en de Kleine Soenda Eilanden, om te eindigen op de eilandjes ten noorden van Noord-Celebes. Hoewel verweerd vulkanisch gesteente en vulkanische as vaak zeer vruchtbaar zijn, is een zandzee waar niets meer groeit rond een vulkaan evenmin ongewoon. De bekendste zandzee is die van de berg Bromo in het Tengger gebergte, reeds toen een toeristische trekpleister. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
