Nederlands: De masenqo is een niet eenvoudig te bespelen Ethiopisch eensnarig strijkinstrument.
De vroegste afbeeldingen van het instrument stammen uit de 18de eeuw. Het is een typisch instrument dat door rondreizende minstrelen - uitsluitend mannen- werd bespeeld om zichzelf te begeleiden. Soms werd de masenqo ook gespeeld in een ensemble samen met fluiten en trommels. Minstrelen speelden op de masenqo een ostinato - basmelodie- ter ondersteuning van hun zang. De sterk gebogen strijkstok wordt daarbij in snel tempo over de snaar bewogen. |
