Nederlands: Op deze foto is de fontein op de binnenplaats van de moskee te zien. De Qarawiyin-moskee in Fès is in 857 (als kapel) gesticht door Fatima al-Fihri, de dochter van een rijke migrant uit de Tunesische stad Kairouan. De naam Qarawiyin verwijst naar de migranten uit deze stad. Het jaartal van oprichting valt in de tijd van de dynastie der Idrissieden (786-920). Tijdens deze dynastie werd de stad Fès gesticht, die door haar gunstige ligging en strategische positie tot bloei kwam. Naast handel en industrie, waren de islamitische wetenschappen belangrijk voor deze stad. Hierbij speelde de Qarawiyin-moskee, die ook dienst deed als universiteit, een belangrijke rol.
Tussen 1135 en 1142 is de moskee in opdracht van de Almorawidische leider Ali ibn Yusuf (1106-1143) uitgebreid. De 18 schepen tellende gebedszaal werd vergroot met nog eens 21 schepen. De moskee was een van de grootste moskeeën en een van de belangrijkste universiteiten van die tijd in de Maghreb. In haar hoogtijdagen trok ze 8000 studenten uit de hele Arabische wereld. Veel afgestudeerden van deze universiteit hebben een belangrijke rol gespeeld in het religieuze, politieke en culturele leven van Marokko. Op dit moment doet de Qarawiyin-moskee nog steeds dienst als moskee en universiteit en heeft de universiteit ook dependances in Marrakech, Rabat en Tétouan. |
