English: Ship model; Model of a canoe with rowers, colonial work
Description |
English: In the canoe 15 figures are depicted, of which 12 rowers. The boat is decorated with painted geometric motifs. On the stern is a flag painted in German colors (although in the wrong order, which is in fact black-red-yellow); there are three letter shapes engraved in it. The prow is decorated with (a kind of) heraldic animals, a feline and a snake, and with a few other motifs, perhaps derived from German imperial symbolism. The figures are unpainted. The rowers are cut loose, and carry a loose paddle in their hands. The standing figures seem to wear western helmet-like headgear, the foremost has a bell in his hand.
Boats like these were made at the end of the 19th century/beginning of the 20th century on the coast of the former German Cameroon, by the Duala. They usually portray canoes that were used at that time, recognizable by very decorative forts, which often ended up as separate pieces in museum collections. (There are also separate paddles in museum collections, which show striking similarities with paddles of the Maroons in Suriname). All boat models that we know date from the German colonial period 1884-1914, so we can assume that the production was discontinued after the Germans were expelled from Cameroon. Given this fact, the prominent German flag and the overall condition, the boat can certainly be dated as before 1914, the boat will be sooner than a late one.

Finally, there are some regular models at art dealers, such as recently in Brussels and Amsterdam. |
