Nederlands: Repronegatief. Billiton is een eiland en voor transport van en naar het eiland waren dus vaartuigen nodig. Arbeiders, rijst en machines werden ingevoerd, het eindproduct tin werd afgevoerd. Het eerste stoomschip (een sleepboot) kwam al in 1864. In 1904 gaf de Billiton Maatschappij het gebruik van eigen stomers op en sloot een overeenkomst met de Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) voor vervoer van en naar Batavia en Singapore. De kustvaart, die nog geruime tijd belangrijk bleef bij gebrek aan goede wegen, kwam in handen van de Stoomvaart Maatschappij Billiton, die naast stomers ook over een groot aantal laadprauwen (cunia) beschikte.
