Nederlands: Negatief. Bij de Bataks was een groot deel van de bewerking van de (sawah)gronden in handen van de vrouwen. De tamelijk dichtbevolkte Batakhoogvlakte was al in de 19e eeuw grotendeels ontbost, zodat ladangbouw er niet meer mogelijk was. De rijst teelt werd hier dan ook grotendeels op sawahs bedreven. Voor grondbewerking had men vaak buffels (karbouwen) die een ploeg trokken of de al natte grond met hun poten tot een gelijkmatige brei omwoelden. Waren er geen buffels (of waren de regens laat), dan werd de grond met de hak bewerkt. Op Sumatra sprak men van 'tjankollen' (van cangkul), op Java (meestal) van 'patjollen' (pacul). (P.
