  • Significance: It was the first plant in the world to demonstrate successfully a practical method of transforming liquid high-level radioactive waste into a solid form. After its first successful campaign from December 1963 to October 1964, in which over 500,000 gallons of liquid were reduced to solid calcine at a volume reduction of about 7 to 1, the facility continued operating until 1981 when a larger-capacity, updated facility took its place to continue the same process...
