Auxiliary Machinery Equipment The pumping equipment includes deckpumps for each hold; vertical duplex,brass-fitted, main boiler feed pump; aduplicate of the latter for use as a gen-eral service donkey pump; duplex hori-zontal piston type bilge pump; a 7-in.duplex, brass-fitted, ballast pump; anda fresh water pump, 4% in.—4 in.—5 in.of duplex type; air pump and centrifugalcirculating pump for main condenser.The feed water heater is of multi-coiltype installed in the feed pump dischargeline. One 7% k.w. Enberg electric gen-erating set is installed in the engineroom for the ships lighting system. Anevaporator of 15 tons capacity is alsoinstalled in the engine room. Deck Machinery For handling cargo there are six 7 in.by 10 in. horizontal double cylindersteam winches of Clark-Chapman type,one at each mast and derrick. The

36 MARINE ENGINEERING OF CANADA winches have central barrels and drums,and are placed on girders above the deck.Each mast carries one pitch pine, 3-tonderrick, the latter long enough to landcargo 10 ft. away from ships side. Thewindlass is of direct-acting type for op-eration by hand, as well as by steam, andis complete with reversing gear. A handscrew steering gear is installed aft, anda steam steering gear amidships. Thetotal bunker capacity is about 350 tons. MIDLAND SHIPBUILDING CO. THE Midland Shipbuilding Co. of Mid-land, Ont., although devoting its en-ergies principally to repair work, v/illshortly lay the keel of a steel freighterwhich will he 261 feet long, 43 ft. 6inches beam, and 23 feet deep. Thecompany is repairing the C.P.R. steamerAthabasca which was damaged late inthe season by ice. Twenty new platesare being replaced in her bow.
