Summary
editDescriptionCannons on the Terrace, Front Park, Buffalo, New York, March 2015.jpg |
English: Designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted as a formal semicircular gravel-paved space for carriage rides and lovely waterfront views (the latter marred since the mid-1950s by the construction of Interstate 190), the Terrace is centered on a statue of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry unveiled to mark the centennial of his heroism in the Battle of Lake Erie, but also sports a set of ornamental cannons aimed toward the river, as seen in this March 2015 photograph. The originals were moved to this site in 1913 from their previous location at Lafayette Square downtown, but were sold for scrap in the early years of World War II; these replacements were installed just a few years before the photo was taken. Some of the high-rises of Buffalo's downtown skyline are visible through the mist on the horizon at right. |
