The first Cape Arago lighthouse was built in 1866 at the entrance to Coos Bay—a dangerous area with over 55 recorded shipwrecks. The lighthouse was replaced in 1908 and again in 1934 (the current structure). Due to extreme weather and tides, several lighthouse keepers were killed or injured trying to reach the island, prompting the construction of a high bridge from the mainland in 1898. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 2006. The Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw had long identified the area as a historic tribal location, including burial grounds on the adjacent point. The bridge was removed (you can still see the supports in the image), and in 2013, ownership of the lighthouse, Chief’s Island, and adjacent Gregory Point were transferred to the Confederated Tribes. All others must now appreciate it from a distance. |
