The arduous journey from Gravesend, England, was more than three months long. Many were struck by illness, and it is thought that at least 16 of the 490 souls on board died (sources differ on the exact numbers). The concern that an infectious and deadly fever was aboard the ship saw quarantine regulations put in force for the first time in Canterbury. Tents and barracks were hastily erected at Camp Bay, owing to the fact that it had only recently been determined as the location for a quarantine station. The ships’ captain and surgeon, Captain Cleaver and Dr Clutterbuck, advocated for the release of the passengers and crew, arguing that the deaths were from various symptoms and that a contagious disease could not be diagnosed. The passengers and crew remained in quarantine for a fortnight. Pictured here are items held at Archives New Zealand’s Christchurch Regional Office: Dr Clutterbuck’s ship diary and telegrams regarding children destined for the Christchurch Orphan Asylum from the Canterbury Provincial Government holdings, and a map of Camp Bay from the Canterbury Survey Office.
