Description
English: Captain James H. Cooper during the Siege of Petersburg, 21 June 1864. Battery B (Cooper's ), 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery was at that time deployed near the Col. John Avery's House south of Petersburg, Virginia. Cooper was promoted from 1st Sergeant to 2d Lieutenant on June 28, 1861, and to Captain, on August 2, 1861. He stayed with the Battery B more than three years, till he was mustered out on August 8, 1864, refusing all promotions. He was commissioned Major, September 24, 1864, but had already left the service.
