Safdarjung's Tomb in Delhi, India, and the need for more central government-led restoration efforts for New Delhi's monuments.

Summary edit

Description
English: Safdarjung's Tomb, situated in Delhi, India, is a sandstone and marble mausoleum constructed in 1754 during the late Mughal Empire period for Nawab Safdarjung. This monument impresses with its spacious design and grandeur, featuring domed and arched structures in red, brown, and white hues. Nawab Safdarjung, who served as the prime minister of the Mughal Empire (Wazir ul-Mamlak-i-Hindustan) during Ahmed Shah Bahadur's reign in 1748, commissioned this tomb.

The tomb is set within a garden and follows a style reminiscent of earlier Mughal imperial tombs, including the iconic Taj Mahal. It contains "eight paradises" (hasht bihisht) or eight chambers surrounding the central chamber under the dome. The garden surrounding it is divided into four sections. This monument holds historical significance as it marks the first instance of someone outside the immediate imperial Mughal family constructing such a tomb and garden complex, signifying the declining power of the emperors by that time.

For those visiting Delhi, Safdarjung's Tomb is conveniently located near Safdarjung Airport, at the junction of Lodhi Road and Aurobindo Marg in New Delhi.
