English: Captured at Sevastapol See Sebastopol,_Crimea
The Siege of Sevastopol took place between 1854 and 1855. It was carried out by British, French, Sardinian, and Turkish troops during the Crimean War. Despite its efforts, the Russian army had to evacuate its stronghold via a pontoon bridge on the north shore of the inlet. The Russians sank their entire fleet to prevent it from falling into enemy hands, thus blocking the entrance to the inlet to the Western ships. The formerly glorious city lay in ruins by the time the enemy troops entered Sevastopol. Here sits the trophy cannon, facing East over Ludlow's market square. |
