Português: O Careto, personagem carnavalesca do interior transmontano português tem a origem nos rituais pagãos pré-cristão que tinham lugar na Península Ibérica. O personagem representa o lado sombrio das forças da natureza, estando ele proibido de entrar em igrejas enquanto corre a aldeia de Podence, no dia de Carnaval. À cintura trás um cinto de chocalhos que usa para chocalhar as raparigas solteiras, simbolizando a fertilidade e juventude, antevendo a estação da Primavera que se avizinha.
English: Careto, a carnival character from the Portuguese Trás-os-Montes region, has its origins in the pre-Christian pagan rituals that took place in the Iberian Peninsula. The character represents the dark side of the forces of nature, being forbidden to enter churches while running the village of Podence, on Carnival day. Around her waist is a belt of rattles that she uses to rattle unmarried girls, symbolizing fertility and youth, foreseeing the coming spring season.
