Description |
English: A painting brought from Oitylo on the Greek Peloponnese to Cargèse in Corsica by immigrants fleeing the Ottomans in 1675-6. It is now displayed in the Greek church of Saint Spyridon, Cargèse, Corsica. The painting is in egg tempera on a wooden panel and measures 109 x 91 cm. It depicts John the Baptist with the wings of an angel. He is dressed in animal skins and has a cross and a scroll in his left hand. The haloed head at his feet foreshadows his beheading. The painting dates from the last quarter of the 17th century. See: http://www.culture.gouv.fr/public/mistral/palissy_fr?ACTION=CHERCHER&FIELD_1=REF&VALUE_1=PM2A000091
