Description
This minor naval battle was part of the First Schleswig War. On June 4, 1849 three armed steamers of the navy of the German Federation headed out from the Weser to attack the Danish corvette Valkyrien off Heligoland. The painting appears to show the Valkyrien firing at the German lead ship, the paddle steamer Barbarossa, while other Danish vessels are approaching.
