Summary edit

Description
English: The Carl and Edward Behn House, 90 Norwood Avenue, Buffalo, December 2019. Built c. 1898, the most noticeable feature on this Queen Anne house is the third-floor façade, faced in fishscale shinges and wherein a large gable encloses an interesting pair of segmental-arched windows as well as a smaller gable projecting above a pair of bay windows and an ancone-supported cornice. Repeated fenestration patterns on the first and second floors, as seen on the side of the buliding at right, indicate that the house was divided into two flats with identical floor plans. Edward L. (dates of birth and death unknown) and Carl Behn (1858-1918) were executives in the Buffalo Refrigerating Machine Company, one of the pioneering steam-powered ice machine manufacturers in the U.S. Carl became head of the company in 1881 upon the death of its founder, his father John Friedrich Behn. The company merged in 1903 with the Marine Engine and Machine Company and moved its headquarters to Harrison, New Jersey, also retaining its Buffalo offices of which Edward Behn remained behind as manager. Both brothers had moved out by 1909, when, according to the Buffalo City Directory, 90 Linwood was home to Mr. and Mrs. Ellery E. Root and Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Beatty.
