English: Carnegie Public Library Former public library at the entrance to West Park on Anlaby Road, Hull. Built in 1904-1905 to designs by city architect JH Hirst, it was one of 660 library buildings in Britain and Ireland to be built with the financial backing of Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish industrialist. The Carnegie Library opened on Tuesday 18th April 1905 and closed in 2003 to be replaced by a new learning centre at the nearby KC Stadium. The Grade II listed building reopened as the Carnegie Heritage Centre http://www.carnegiehull.co.uk/ on 1st January 2008 with the words 'public library' blacked out, and is now home to the East Yorkshire Family History Society. |
