English: Carntogher. "Shane's Leaps" with Seefin Hill in the distance. Shane Crossagh O'Mullan. A notorious highwayman, who roamed around the north of Co Derry. His family was evicted from their small farm, he then lived in the mountains above Claudy. Lived life on the dark side of the law (The Robin Hood equivalent for Northern Ireland) An un-named Dungiven weaver betrayed him to the military and he was taken into custody. Taken to Derry's Gaol, found guilty of stealing and hanged along with his two sons in the Diamond in Derry (1722) All three are buried in Banagher graveyard a short distance from Dungiven. |
