Carol Roberts, Supervisory Fish and Wildlife, Biologist, Carlsbad Fish and Wildlife Office, Carlsbad, Calif.

Who is your Female Conservation Hero or Mentor? Well, having spent more than half of my career working in Environmental Contaminants, I would have to say Rachel Carson.

Where did you go to school or military branch? B.S. at the University of Cincinnati and M.S. at UC- Irvine.

What did you study? Biology as an undergraduate; biology with an emphasis in behavioral ecology in graduate school.

How did you get interested in conservation? I developed an interest in nature and wildlife growing up playing in the woods near where I lived and watching shows like “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” and the “Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau.” My interest shifted towards conservation when I moved to California and became aware of the biological diversity that was rapidly being lost to development.

What’s your favorite species and why?

It is so difficult to choose, but I would say that the desert pupfish is my favorite of the species I have worked with. It has survived for eons against all the odds and in some very difficult conditions, like at the Salton Sea!
