| Description |
English: The Caroline Gunn House, 4765 Ransom Road at Boyd Drive, Clarence, New York, October 2020. Although the Town of Clarence Historic Preservation Commission, in their nomination of the house for landmark status, estimated 1860 as the year of construction, there is no record of the house's existence until the 1905 New York State census, where it's recorded as the home of Caroline Zimmer Gunn (1839-1931), widow of Jefferson Gunn (1819-1901) whose extensive land holdings in the southern part of Clarence included both this parcel as well as a much larger one about two miles west of here that lent its name to what's now Gunnville Road. The house was probably built shortly after his death. Nonetheless, its design does indeed have more in common with 19th century farmhouse architecture, with a cross-gabled roof, breezy front porch framing the entrance, and intact original stone foundation and leaded glass windows. |
